BARTOLI ENDS AZAREKA’S WINNING STREAK

Victoria Azarenka’s record breaking 26 match winning streak has been broken by the Italian Marion Bartoli. The upset came an APT hard court even in Miami. Azarenka never looked like winning the match going down in straight sets and struggling to keep composed during the match. She was visibly disappointed after the game and left the court quickly.

Azarenka’s winning streak has lasted all season and has earned her four major titles including the Australian Open. In the course of winning 26 games she also managed to achieve world number 1 status and earned the reputation as the toughest female player to beat on tour.

Her other title wins came in Sydney, Doha and Indian wells. She won the hard court title in Sydney right beforw her Australian Open win which was played in Melbourne.

The only player to have a longer winning streak was Martina Hingis in 1997 when she won 37 games in a row. Experts believe it will be a long time befor that record is broken considering the depth of international tennis at the moment and the heavy workload for modern players.

Azarenka may have been suffering fatigue as her last game was also a marathon with the world’s best managing to come back from being a set and fives games to two down. This match would have drained her energy making a similar comeback in her game against Bartoli almost impossible.

Her Italian opponent will now move on to face Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the semi-finals and, according to the latest tennis betting odds, is a slim favourite to make the Final.
