BARTOLI NETS WIN

Marion Bartoli has defeated Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia in the second round of the French Open. Bartoli won the match in the straight sets by 7-6, 7-5.

Bartoli was the hot favourite entering this match and she was supposed to walk away with an easy victory. But, that wasn’t the case to be. She was given tough fight in both the sets by the Colombian youngster.

Although Marino’s effort was not good enough to get better of Bartoli but, she definitely won everybody’s heart with her fighting spirit.

Talking to the reporters in the post match interview, Bartoli said, “It was a tough contest. Thankfully, I ended up on the right side of it. I served poorly especially in the first set and I am really upset about it. I need to improve a few things before the next match.”

Bartoli also hailed her opponent in that interview. The Frenchwoman said, “I was playing against Marino for the first time and I think she has got a lot of potential. She is very quick on her feet and she made things extremely difficult for me. I think she has a bright future.”

In the first set, Bartoli had a terrible start as she dropped her serve in the 2nd game and got down by 0-2.

Bartoli broke back in the 3rd game, but, she lost her serve again in the 4th game which made the score 3-1 in Marino’s favour. The next 4 games went with the serve and when the 8th game ended, Marino was leading by 5-3.

Bartoli equalized the scores with a serve break in the 9th game and a serve hold in the 10th game. The next couple of games went with the serve and the set went into the tie breaker.

In the tie breaker, Bartoli because of her experience soaked up the pressure well and pulled it off to seal the opener.

In the second set, both the players broke each other’s serve twice in the first 10 games which kept the scores levelled at 5-5.

Bartoli held her serve in the 11th game to take a lead of 6-5. A serve hold by Marino in the next game could have taken the set into the tie breaker, but, the Colombian player couldn’t do that. Her serve was broken for the third time in the set and she lost the match.

In the next round, Bartoli will face Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
