Marion Bartoli left her second round match in the Sony Open in the middle because of a foot injury. Bartoli was competing against Andrea Petkovic of Germany in the second round.

Bartoli was not in a great position when she decided to leave the match. She had lost the first set by 3-6, while, in the second set, she was trailed by 1-4.

Due to Bartoli’s withdrawal, Petkovic got an entry into the third round where she will face Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia.

Talking to the reporters after the match, Petkovic said, “I first saw Marion limping when I was ahead by 3-1 in the second set and then, she decided to quit immediately. During the warm up, she was moving alright. She warmed up for about 30 minutes and she was looking fit. I am sure she discovered that injury while playing in the match.”

“For me, it’s a great result. I moved really well on the court. I have worked hard on my movement in the last few weeks and my coach has helped me a lot in that.”

Marion Bartoli had left a match against Petkovic in Internationaux de Strasbourg a couple of years back and Petkovic had eventually managed to win that tournament. When asked about that, Petkovic said, “Yes, I remember that. I hope that the same thing would happen this time around as well. However, these are early days in the tournament. There a quite a few matches to go. So, thinking about winning the title is not appropriate at this point of time. I just need to think about the next game.”

Sony Open is only the second tournament in which Petkovic is participating after getting injured in the Hopman Cup earlier this year. She had made her comeback in the BNP Paribas Open which was played a few days ago.
