SIMON MISES OUT

Marion Bartoli’s compatriot, Gilles Simon, has been defeated by Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the semi final of the BNP Paribas Masters 2012 on Saturday. Janowicz won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 7-5.

Janowicz is participating in this tournament for the first time. He made his way into the main draw by performing brilliantly in the qualifying tournament. And, now, in the main draw, he has pulled quite a few upsets and has reached the final.

In the semi final match, Janowicz was considered as an underdog as Simon was much more experienced than him. But, the way the 21 years old Polish player dominated against Simon, it is clear that he is going to be a superstar in the future.

In the first set, first four games went with the serve. But, in the fifth game, Janowicz was on fire. He played a flurry of powerful return shots and earned a breakpoint. He capitalized on that and broke Simon’s service to get ahead by 3-2. He held his service in the next game and the score became 4-2. The Polish youngster kept the lead till the end and sealed the opening set by 6-4.

In the second set, both the players held their service in the first 10 games and the score card was showing 5-5. But, in the next two games, Janowicz was all over Simon. The Polish player lost just three points in the next couple of games and won the second set by 7-5 to finish the match.

In the post match press conference, Janowicz said, “I am delighted with the way I have played in the last few days. As I had already defeated some highly ranked players in the previous matches, so, I was confident before this match. I started well and after getting that breakpoint in the first set, I never really looked back.”
